For several years now I have reflected on a nagging question. In Christ, what was, that is, what is history or past, what is, or what is our present reality and what is to come; what remains a future reality in God, from an eschatological perspective. I suppose it was this question that led me to preach this 2007 Fontana series titled The Overcomers Life. The primary text that I preached this series of messages from was taken from the book of Revelation, chapter 1, verse eight.
“I am Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
In my initial study of this passage, within the context of John’s Revelation of Jesus Christ, I was struck with the lack of proper syntax of the writer; should it not say who was, who is and who is to come? Certainly, that is the way it is sung in our modern choruses. Yet, in keeping with the concept that John was no doubt intentional in his recording of the vision that he received from the Lord, I had to assume the significance of the way he presented this passage of Scripture.
